Size, shape, elevations, and layout are different for most every park. Skate Parks can be challenging to light properly because skating is a fast, multi-directional sport that are typically located in urban areas where spill light is a major concern. Good lighting design considerations are:
✔ Pole quantity, location and mounting heights to reduce glare and shadows.
✔ Proper light levels to be able to quickly see the contour changes
✔ Quality of spill control
✔ Class III
20 Average Horizontal Footcandles (200 Lux)
0.25 or less Coefficient of Variation (CV)
3:1 or better Max to Min ratio (M/M)
✔ Class IV
5 Minimum Horizontal Footcandles
0.25 or less CV
3:1 or better M/M
✔ Minimum Vertical illuminance at vertical surfaces should be a minimum of 5 footcandles, regardless of class of play.
✔ Horizontal readings should be taken at grade on a 15’ x 15’ grid
✔ Vertical readings for curved bowl features and raised devices should be taken at the surface
✔ Most skate parks are used for recreation only. Higher light levels and better uniformities should be considered for competition and exhibition games.

✔ Pole spacing and height should be proportionally arranged in direct correlation with the size of the area.
✔ Poles should all be located along sides with aiming to reduce glare and shadows. Light should come from at least 2 different sources, to reduce shadowing.
✔ Skaters exiting a deep bowl look upward to identify the edge of the bowl, consideration to eliminate glare is very important, in this circumstance.
